EAD Announces Over 40 Planned Workshops for 2015 National Gathering

WASHINGTON, DC —  Ecumenical Advocacy Days for Global Peace with Justice (EAD) is pleased to announce over forty planned workshops that will be offered during three workshop sessions during EAD’s thirteenth annual national gathering, April 17-20, 2015. The gathering is titled, “Breaking the Chains: Mass Incarceration and Systems of Exploitation.”

Workshops at EAD 2015 will center on building a movement to “shake the foundations of systems of human exploitation,” including a prison-industrial system that incarcerates millions of people in the U.S. and abroad. EAD’s theme description that will guide workshop presentations focuses on “a world that incarcerates so many and allows some to profit from the exploitation of slave, trafficked and forced labor remains far from the ‘beloved community’ which we are all called to seek.”

Specific issue areas that will be highlighted include: Africa, Asia Pacific, Domestic U.S., Eco-Justice, Global Economic Justice, Latin America and the Caribbean, the Middle East, and Peace and Global Security.

 A sample of workshop highlights include:

  • Criminal Justice Reform
  • Criminalization of communities of color
  • For-profit prisons and immigrant detention
  • Youth incarceration
  • Drug policy and global war on drugs
  • Human trafficking in the U.S., Africa, and Asia Pacific
  • Harmful U.S. trade policies
  • Corporate and government predatory behavior against the poor
  • How corporate interests have exploited our food and farmers
  • De-militarizing law enforcement and disarming U.S. foreign policy
  • Occupation as a system of exploitation in the Israel/Palestine conflict
  • Detention of Palestinian minors
  • Detention of migrants in Mexico & the U.S.
  • Militarization of U.S.-Africa security programs
  • The root issues to the prolonged Ebola crises
  • Migrant worker issues on the Korean peninsula
