Come to EAD for Earth Week 2020 to Mark Earth Day 50th Anniversary

February 4, 2020

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Earth Day — April 22, 2020. And there are so many exciting things happening that week in Washington, D.C., that are centered around care of God’s Creation and addressing global climate change.

With our theme of “Imagine! God’s Earth and People Restored,” #EAD2020 will amplify the voices of the Christian community on these urgent issues, as we join with groups from around the world to coming to call on the U.S. government to do better and to acknowledge this important milestone.

Our National Gathering and Lobby Day April 24-27 will explore the intersection of climate change and economic injustice. This will galvanize our advocacy on behalf of policies and programs to chip away at the systems of oppression that keep people in poverty and push all life on earth to the brink of destruction.

Come to D.C. early to join a youth-led movement of activists planning three days of climate strikes April 22-24. On Wednesday, April 22, they will “center and hear from Indigenous people and people of color and reflect on our personal connections to the earth.” On Thursday, April 23, they will call on financial institutions to quit profiting off our planet. And on Friday, April 24, they “will focus on escalated actions targeting elected officials, with a demand that the climate crisis is addressed urgently.”

Earth Day Network will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Earth Day with multiple events throughout the week and a large gathering on the National Mall on Saturday, April 25. #EAD2020 will give participants the opportunity to meet up and head to the Mall for this celebration!

#EAD2020 sponsor Interfaith Power & Light is holding Faith Climate Action Week, April 17-26. Faith Climate Action Week is 10 days in April during Earth Month when IPL congregations focus on how we can all take action to protect our climate. This year’s theme is “Love Made Visible: Engaging in Sacred Activism” to protect the people we care about who are most affected by climate change. Attending #EAD2020 is one of their action items.

#EAD2020 sponsor Creation Justice Ministries has just released a worship resource for Earth Sunday, whose theme is “The Fierce Urgency of Now.” We know we have 10 years to take action to avert the most catastrophic damage to the life-sustaining climate God blessed us with, and entrusted to our care. Every action we take now matters. (Get more details about the toolkit.)
